Juniper
What do Van Gogh, cave art, ASMR, synesthesia, David Bowie, and cymatics have in common? A blurring of boundaries between two worlds—the sonic and the visual. This relationship is the focus of Juniper, an immersive interdisciplinary experiment in sound, vision, and creativity.
As both a visual artist and musician/composer, I have explored the relationship between sound and vision since I was a teenager. How does one make visual art more like music and music more like drawing? Is it possible to make paintings that move and music that stands still?
These questions have sustained my work for over four decades. I create sonic environments conducive to creativity and listen while drawing or painting; the visual output then influences changes in the music. Together they form a positive feedback loop, each influencing the other, like the push and pull of magnets in an electric motor, spinning on an axis. My visual art is usually encountered in a quiet gallery, separated from the sonic environment that helped make it. Juniper brings these two practices together within a single immersive environment.
Finding a space suitable for Juniper also provided a glimpse into the realities of New York City real estate. This iteration has therefore become the open studio edition, with the fruits of Juniper presented in the place where they were born.
On display will be a selection of Juniper drawings and paintings alongside the music co-created with the visual works. Finished compositions from the upcoming Juniper album will be heard alongside live sonic environments, process videos of the visual work being made, and video/sound collaborations with Angie Drakopoulos.
